With all of the gridlock in Washington, it is nice to see Congress agreeing at least on one thing. The American people love the NFL, and allowing the Washington Commanders to relocate back to DC from their current home in Landover, Maryland reaffirms that.[1] Congress had to approve the funds for the demolition and conversion of the site of the old RFK stadium to make way for a new $4 billion stadium on the site.[2] This project is unique in that it required cooperation between the DC city council as well as Congress.[3] The project site is federal lands, and the measure was part of a $3 billion omnibus bill brought up in December 2024.[4] Department of Government Efficiency head Elon Musk was vehemently opposed to the project due to concern that it would pass on costs to federal taxpayers, not just DC residents.[5] Congress had to vote to approve transferring ownership of the land back to the city of DC.[6] The funding for the actual construction of the stadium is a mix of private funds and funds from the DC taxpayers, which had to be approved by the DC city council.[7] The ultimate impetus for the project, as stated by DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, is economic development.[8]
The project is not without its detractors, though. Some are worried about the taxpayer cost, traffic, and parking issues that come with a new stadium.[9] Many Senate Republicans also opposed the bill transferring the land because of unfounded claims of burdening federal taxpayers.[10] In a world where we see very little bipartisanship, it is refreshing to see the project get wide support, showing that sports are still something that bring the nation together in a time when we are so deeply divided.[11]
