Co-Founders

Helen A. “Nellie” Drew is Director of the UB Center for the Advancement of Sport at the University at Buffalo School of Law and a nationally recognized expert in sports law, with particular focus on the intersection of legal policy, athlete safety, and sports medicine. Her professional experience includes negotiating and drafting contracts for NHL players and advising on major league transactions, including franchise expansions and player acquisitions. Drew has played a key role in high‑profile matters involving professional hockey and continues to advance research and policy promoting healthy and safe sports participation.

Joeseph W. Schafer earned his JD from the University at Buffalo School of Law in 2018. A Buffalo‑based attorney, his practice and teaching focus on the intersection of sports, business, and antitrust law. He has advised clients on transactional, regulatory, and compliance matters in the sports and entertainment industries and has worked extensively on issues related to collegiate athletics, name, image, and likeness (NIL), and emerging sports markets. Schafer is an adjunct professor at the University at Buffalo School of Law, where he teaches courses examining federal antitrust law and its application to amateur and professional sports.

Alex Brockhuizen is an associate attorney with Bond, Schoeneck & King PLLC, where her practice focuses on advising clients across a range of legal matters. She earned her JD from the University at Buffalo School of Law in 2025, where she pursued a concentration in Sports Law and was actively involved in legal scholarship and student leadership. During law school, Brockhuizen contributed as a writer and editor on sports and labor law topics and completed multiple professional placements, gaining experience in both private practice and corporate legal settings. She joined Bond, Schoeneck & King following graduation and is admitted to practice in New York.

David H. Reinharz is an associate at Bond Schoeneck & King PLLC and a 2025 graduate of the University at Buffalo School of Law. At UB Law, he served as Publications Editor of the Buffalo Human Rights Law Review, received CALI awards in Employment Law and Trial Technique, pursued a concentration in sports law, and held leadership roles in multiple student organizations. He earned his undergraduate degree from Hobart & William Smith Colleges, where he was a four‑year NCAA student‑athlete in tennis.

Mary Starr is a 3L at the University at Buffalo School of Law with a concentration is sports law. Hockey is her favorite sport, and she’s especially interested in writing about player safety and labor issues. In law school, Mary is involved with the Buffalo Sports and Entertainment Law Society, Phi Alpha Delta, OutLaw, the Jewish Law Students Association, Buffalo Human Rights Law Review, the Peer-to-Peer Mentorship Program, and she is a student ambassador. Outside of school, Mary can be found playing hockey, rock climbing, or expressing her undying love for the Boston Bruins
