Texas Tech booster and billionaire businessman Cody Campbell has created a group called “Saving College Sports,” which focuses on the dangers athletic departments are facing.[1] Campbell believes that women’s and Olympic sports are in immediate danger. His proposed solution is to modernize the Sports Broadcasting Act, which he believes would generate the necessary funding to protect all sports. Campbell’s ultimate goal is to save college sports, as reflected in the commercial he recently created. However, the commercial does not explain how the Sports Broadcasting Act would accomplish this goal.[2]
Campbell released a new commercial that criticizes power-conference commissioners. Fox and ABC refuse to run this commercial. Campbell is lobbying Congress against the SCORE Act with the belief that a new governing body should replace the NCAA.[3] Campbell posted on X that Fox and ABC have given no good reason for refusing to air the ad, advising Campbell to contact their attorneys.[4] ESPN, who shares rights with ABC under their parent company Disney, did not comment, however an ESPN source stated this decision reflects their standard review procedures. The network requested additional documentation regarding the ad, but it was not given to ESPN, so the network did not air it this weekend.[5]
Campbell’s newest ad targets college conference commissioners, accusing them of caring only about money and control. Campbell states, “Their greed is bankrupting all but the biggest schools—and women’s sports and Olympic programs everywhere are paying the price.” The commercial highlights his plan to modernize the Sports Broadcasting Act and his lobbying efforts to save college sports.[6]
Fox, ESPN, and Disney own at least partial broadcasting rights to every power conference. These power conferences have been running ads advocating for the SCORE Act, which is exactly what Campbell is lobbying against.[7] These broadcasting channels have a clear conflict of interest with Campbell’s newest ad. While Campbell’s efforts have stalled the SCORE Act, the NCAA and the power conferences are still trying to pass this act.
