Former Wide Receiver Antonio Brown Accused of Attempted Murder

Antonio Brown is facing an attempted murder charge from an incident that occurred on May 16th, 2025.[1] Brown is accused of grabbing a handgun from security personnel after a boxing match in Miami, Florida.[2] In addition, he is accused of firing two shots at Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, whom he had gotten into a fight with.[3] Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu stated that one of the bullets “grazed his neck.”[4]

In Florida, an attempted murder charge carries a maximum 15-year prison sentence.[5] Assistant State Attorney Stephanie Cruz said that Brown could face double the time because he allegedly used a handgun.[6] Upon conviction, the law also carries a possible 20-year minimum mandatory sentence.[7]

Brown appeared at an arraignment hearing in Miami-Dade Circuit Court where his lawyer, Mark Eiglarsh, stated that Brown had entered a not guilty plea.[8] Last week, Brown was released from jail on a $25,000 bond, and required to wear an ankle monitor.[9] At the hearing, Brown did not speak, and Judge Marisa Tinkler-Mendez set a status hearing for December 22nd.[10] Eiglarsh stated at a previous hearing that the affidavit is incorrect because Brown used his own firearm, and the shots were not actually aimed at anyone.[11] Brown said on social media that he was “defending himself from an attack and that others were trying to steal jewelry from him.”[12] He is on house arrest pending trial, and no trial date has been set yet.[13]

Brown has faced numerous legal issues since his career ended in 2021.[14] For instance, he was accused of not paying child support, domestic violence, indecent exposure and battery, and more.[15] Brown was in the NFL for twelve years and was an All-Pro wide receiver.[16] He also received a Super Bowl championship with Tom Brady.[17] In his career, Brown had “928 receptions for more than 12,000 yards and accounted for 88 total touchdowns, counting punt returns and one pass.”[18]

Trials often take a long time, so we will see whether Brown is found guilty of attempted murder soon. Brown is also expecting his eighth child in June.[19]
