The Atlanta Hawks fell to a 3-1 deficit in their series against the Boston Celtics on Sunday night, April 23rd.1 Following the defeat, Hawks starting shooting guard, Dejounte Murray, was videotaped bumping into NBA official Gediminas Petraitis. 2While it is currently unclear whether the contact was intentional or unintentional, what is clear is the NBA’s intent to investigate the matter further. Within hours of the event, the NBA had opened an investigation into the incident. 3
Murray is a major factor in the success of the Atlanta Hawks, and losing him for even one more game in the series against the Celtics could prove fatal to the Hawks’ season. Murray was the youngest player in NBA history to be named to an NBA All-Defensive team in 2018.4 Additionally, Murray played in the 2022 All-Star game as an injury replacement for Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green. With the Hawks already being down 3-1 in the series, losing one of their top players could potentially spell an end to their season.
Gediminas Petraitis is serving his 8th season in the NBA, having officiated 386 regular season games and seven playoff games in the past. 5He has not been involved with an incident like this prior to the Hawks vs Celtics game on Sunday night. However, Murray is no stranger to the consequences the NBA can hand down for certain interactions with officials. In 2022, as a member of the San Antonio Spurs, Murray was fined $20,000 for throwing the basketball off the legs of an official in that game.6 It is currently unclear what, if any, impact these previous actions will have on the Leagues decision in this matter.
There is League precedent for disciplining players who “bump” into officials. Earlier this season, the Boston Celtic’s Grant Williams was suspended for one game after making contact on court with official Cheryl Flores. 7While Grant Williams denied making the contact intentionally, the video of Dejounte Murray bumping Petraitis appears to viewers to be somewhat intentional. That factual difference, as well as this incident occurring during a playoff game, rather than during the regular season, could lead to differing outcomes. Regardless, we will not have to wait long to know how the situation will be resolved, as the next game in the series is scheduled for Tuesday, April 25th.
