In the early morning of Saturday, October 4th, former NFL quarterback and current Fox commentator, Mark Sanchez, was involved in an altercation with a 69-year-old truck driver in downtown Indianapolis.1 Early reports indicated that Sanchez had been stabbed and was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries.2 Following the news of the stabbing, those close to Sanchez including former teammates and current co-workers at Fox, spoke out offering support and endorsing his character.3
In the following days public opinion would flip. Word came out that Sanchez was the aggressor in the incident.4 The victim stated he was collecting grease from the hotel that Sanchez was staying at, when Sanchez began circling his truck.5 Sanchez reportedly then claimed that he had spoken to the hotel manager and insisted that the victim move his truck.6 The victim then attempted to call his manager when Sanchez allegedly prevented him from doing so, and a struggle ensued.7 In an attempt to defend himself the victim pepper-sprayed Sanchez.8 When the pepper-spray did not prevent Sanchez’s attacks, the victim began to fear for his life and he stabbed Sanchez multiple times.9 After the stabbing, an intoxicated Sanchez reportedly ran inside the hotel and was helped by a bartender.10
Both Sanchez and the victim were taken to the hospital for their injuries.11 Sanchez suffered stab wounds to his chest, while the victim had significant injuries to his head, jaw, and neck.12 Police questioning Sanchez found him to be uncooperative,13 and he was later arrested at the hospital.14 He was initially charged with misdemeanor battery resulting in injury, public intoxication, and unlawful entry of a motor vehicle.15 On Monday, October 6, Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears announced that Sanchez had an additional felony battery charge resulting in serious bodily injury, a charge that carries a sentence of one to six years.16 Mears stated that new information on the victim’s medical condition made additional charges necessary.17
On the same Monday that Sanchez’s charges were updated, the victim of the attack filed a lawsuit against Sanchez and Fox alleging assault and battery as well as negligent hiring, retention, and supervision.18 The victim alleges that Sanchez had a reputation for drinking and being aggressive while intoxicated, and the Fox Corporation should have been aware of this reputation and provided better supervision.19 Fox, which originally supported Sanchez,20 has now removed him from the commentary lineup and replaced him with Brady Quinn.21 Sanchez waived his initial hearing and reportedly intends to plead not guilty.22 He is next due in court on November 5, for a pretrial conference, and in the interim his career and his freedom hang in the balance.23
