Some of the sports powerhouse names of year 2024 were Ilhona Maher, Caitlin Clark, Simone Biles, and Sha’Carri Richardson. These individuals were frequently in articles, discussions, and scattered throughout media. A shift in sports occurred in 2024 with the 2024 Summer Paris Olympics: women’s sports were at the forefront of discussion. Women’s sports in the past few years have been battling, arguably successfully, to be considered by the public eye to be equal to male sports, and 2024 was the year that the public seemed to catch on.
Woman such as Caitlin Clark and Simone Biles became new idols in the sports realm for both female and male athletes. Ilhona Maher became a new sports idol for her ability to juxtapose strength and beauty on the United States female Rugby team of the Paris 2024 Olympics. Sha’Carri Richardson displayed resilience through the television show “Sprint” that was released in 2024 documenting her journey to becoming the fastest woman in the world and her battle in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. In addition to these all-star individual athletes, several sports teams such as the US women’s soccer team and the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) were on fire with their success and media popularity.1
This shift from the spotlight being on men’s sports to the spotlight being shared with women’s sports, specifically with basketball, soccer, and hockey, allowed for a popular phrase to emerge: “Everybody Watches Women’s Sports.”2 This slogan was seen on shirts worn by prominent athletes such as Stephen Curry, Ted Lasso, Jason Sudekis, and was even brought on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show by cofounder women’s basketball legend Sue Bird.3 In Paris at the 2024 Summer Olympics, a French translation that said, ” Tout Le Monde Regarde Le, Sport Feminin“ of this phrase was also seen throughout women’s sports.4
This slogan was promptly filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) by the brand Togethxr, a brand created by female athlete all-stars such as Sue Bird, Alex Morgan, Chloe Kim, and Simone Manuel.5 On April 11, 2024, the brand filed for the trademark of the slogan and was quickly given trademark registration after there was no opposition to the mark.6 The brand also filed with the international classes of 18 and 25 for trademark use on shirts, totes, and sweatshirts.7 In addition to making clothes and totes, the brand has now partnered with Nike for a basketball shoe displaying the trademarked” Everybody Watches Womans Sports” on the heel.8 This trademark has proven to be successful for the brand, selling over three (3) million dollars of merchandise this last year.9
It is time the spotlight of sports is shared by both men and women. As Jessica Robinson, the Togethxr’s content and media manager, recently stated, “’The truth is, women’s sports fans have beenhere,’ she said. ‘You just have to make it available.’”10
