MORE THAN STATS: BILLS PRIORITIZE CULTURE WHEN CHOOSING PLAYERS FOR 2026-2027 SEASON

It is clear after the 2025 NFL draft that the Bills prioritize a characteristic when picking their next star players: morale. The first pick by the Bills was cornerback Maxwell Hairston as the 30th overall pick in the draft.1 Throughout the draft as fellow peers were picked, Maxwell continued to cheer on his peers as he patiently waited for his time to be chosen.2 Once Hairston was picked by the Bills team, he enthusiastically celebrated with his parents before joining the stage wearing a suit jacket that had inner lining pictures of his family.3 Not only were the Bills focused on skill level when picking their next team members, but also on character that would complement the established culture.

During last season’s playoffs, quarterback Josh Allen spoke out about the locker room culture present for the team and why players keep coming back to the team.

‘’Coach [Sean] McDermott talks about the process a lot, and we genuinely, we love the process here. We love going through it, you know, we’re not going through the motions… Guys that just love being around the building, love being around each other. And again, I think that’s part of the reason why we’ve been having the success that we’ve had. Guys are bought in.’”4

Part of the Bills’ success is their ability to acquire players with ideal attitudes towards the game. In the 2024-2025 season, the team brought back the experienced safety Micah Hyde to the practice squad in a leadership role to help guys on and off the field.5 Hyde’s experience on the field during playoff times will be used to help lead new and older players to success with off the field coaching. Micah Hyde stated that his reasons for coming back were to beable to be a part of the team in a new role and to help the team in any way that he could.6

The culture cultivated by the team players and Coach McDermott is shown in players’ eagerness to return to, and to stayon the Bills. Not all NFL teams have been able to create successful locker room cultures such as the Bills, as egos and numbers can easily take priority over being a team player. Yet, for the Bills it is clear that both culture and amazing stats can work hand in hand to create a team built to tackle great wins and even greater loses. With these new picks from the 2025 Draft as well as players re-signing, the Bills continue to cultivate a strong and determined team for the 2025-2026 season
