Domino Effect at Michigan State after Mel Tucker Firing

Michigan State University is facing a ripple effect following the firing of head football coach Mel Tucker last month. Mel Tucker, during his time at Michigan State, won Big10 coach of the year in 2021, and went 20-14 in three seasons after signing a 10-year contract, with a $95 million extension in 2021. De-commits in sports come very often when there is a firing of a head coach, and this is currently what is happening at Michigan State within the football team.

Within the month of Mel Tucker’s firing, there have already been two de-commits from his recruiting class.[1] It is still early, so it is safe to say these most likely won’t be the last. Camren Campbell, a three-star defensive back out of Florida, was the first to de-commit, before reports of Mel Tucker’s suspension, on September 23, 2023.[2] Reggie Powers, III, a four-star safety, was next, as he de-committed just hours before the official firing of Mel Tucker, on September 26, 2023. The most recent is Jordan Simmons, a three-star running back who de-committed on October 9, 2023.

On top of de-commits, some of the current athletes have now faced other losses due to the current state of the football program. “Spartan Dawgs 4 Life” – the official NIL brand for Michigan State, informed around 3 dozen of the MSU football players that their contracts have been canceled.[3] The reason stated was a shortage of funds.[4] Certain players’ agents have come forward and stated the reason why they believe the contracts are being cancelled is due to the fact that they don’t want to have to pay out contracts for players who potentially will be entering the transfer portal after the season.[5] It is likely many players especially ones newer to the team, will transfer after this season due to the unknowns on the future of the MSU football program as well as their future careers after the firing of the head coach.

An update with Mel Tucker and his current position with the school: he is set to have a Title IX hearing that will weigh the allegations of sexual harassment against him.[6] It also needs to be determined whether or not the school owes Tucker any of the $80 million remaining on his contract.

It is important to be able to recognize the domino effect that one situation can ultimately cause. The firing of this head coach and the litigation ahead will affect not only the present and future coaching staff and players, but also the other students and professors that currently attend or plan on attending Michigan State as it changes the face of the entire university.
