Bill Belichick decided to part ways with New England on Thursday January 11, after a historic journey as their head coach. Belichick spent a remarkable 24 seasons with the New England Patriots that included 17 division titles, 9 Super Bowl appearances and 6 Super Bowl titles.[1] Belichick had 1 year remaining on his contract at the time of his departure, but will be allowed to leave the team without the Patriots seeking compensation.[2] This will ease Belichick’s transition as he still plans to continue his coaching career. Patriots’ owner, Robert Kraft, noted that he believed Belichick has earned the right to leave the organization, instead of being part of a trade.[3] Rightfully so.
Belichick is leaving New England with 333 career victories (including playoffs), ranking second all-time behind Don Shula with 347. Belichick, George Halas, and Curly Lambeau are the only NFL coaches with 6 championships since the league began postseason play in 1933.[4] Belichick’s 24-year tenure was the fifth-longest of any head coach with 1 team. He had completed his 49th consecutive NFL season in 2023, the most consecutive coaching seasons in league history.[5]
Jerod Mayo, the team’s linebacker coach, was identified as the rising head coach candidate. Mayo played for the Patriots from 2008-2014 and was an assistant under Belichick since 2019.[6] Mayo was named the head coach just one day after Belichick announced his departure.[7] Mayo’s contract contained a succession clause and was filed with the NFL and accepted.[8] This clause meant that the Patriots did not have to conduct any interviews in order to comply with the NFL’s minority hiring requirements.[9] Normally any NFL team with a head coaching vacancy must conduct in-person interviews with at least 2 minority candidates from outside the organization.[10] Mayo becomes the first Black head coach in Patriots history, and will have a tall task up against him as the Patriots have struggled since Brady’s departure.[11] The team this past season went 3-13 , causing them to be one of the first teams eliminated from the postseason.[12]
This is definitely a pivotal moment in not only the Patriots franchise, but the NFL as a whole as Bill Belichick arguably will be one of the best to ever do it. He will be a future Hall of Fame coach.
