Former NFL player, Sergio Brown, was arrested in Southern California last week, in connection with the death of his mother in October. Sergio Brown had fled to Mexico just days after his mother was found slain in the back of her Chicago home.[1] He is currently being held without bail.[2] Under the US interstate extradition laws, a hearing is required if a defendant does not waive extradition. In this case, Brown has agreed to be extradited back to Chicago sometime before November 13, 2023.[3]
The original search for Brown occurred when relatives notified authorities that they could not contact Sergio Brown or his mother, Mrytle Brown.[4] Myrtle’s body was found shortly after near a creek, and a medical examiner ruled her death a homicide as a result of an assault.[5] Brown was originally deported back to the United States after a scuffle with the Mexican police. Brown was detained and was booked into the San Diego County Jail[6]. In the days following Brown’s mother’s death, Brown posted to his social media that the news of the death of his mother was fake.
During Sergio’s time in the NFL, he played with a couple of different teams. He played for the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Buffalo Bills.[7] He was a defensive back and played from 2010-2016. Brown went undrafted in the 2010 draft and ended up signing with the Patriots practice squad. After he spent the first 6 weeks on the practice squad, he was promoted to the 53-man roster.[8] Brown ended up playing 11 games for the Patriots and finished the season with 11 tackles.[9] Sergio was waived by the Patriots in 2012 before the beginning of the 2012 NFL season.[10] Brown then signed a deal with the Colts, staying there for 3 seasons before going to the Jaguars.[11] He was released after a year, then signed with the Bills.[12]
Sergio is facing first degree murder charges, and neither he nor his attorney has spoken about the matter as of yet.
